These herds of reindeer wander across vast areas and feed mainly on lichens, mosses, and fungi. Both males and females grow antlers—a rare trait among deer. Males shed theirs in late autumn, while females keep theirs until spring, giving them an advantage in protecting food sources during pregnancy. Although the animals live freely, they are gathered by their owners once a year.
