Photos The Gambia
In March 2025 my wife and I went on a week-long trip to the beautiful Gambia, the smallest country in Africa, also known as the 'Smiling Coast of Africa'. It is a poor country at the West coast of Africa, but the people are very friendly. There are few large animal species, but for birdwatching, it’s a paradise. We stayed in the small but beautiful Belgambia lodge and were accompanied by an excellent guide.
During this trip, we mainly did birdwatching and we were able to spot no less than 180 bird species, including colorful turacos, kingfishers, bee-eaters, rollers, sunbirds, woodpeckers, estrildid finches, hornbills, ... We also saw countless water birds such as herons, spoonbills, pelicans and flamingos, but also various owl species and many birds of prey. We also saw 4 species of monkeys, squirrels and quite a few lizards.
We spent a lot of time in the Mandinari region, where we explored the Lamin rice fields and the Tanbi wetlands. We also headed to the coast, visiting Kotu and Bijilo National Park, and discovered the forests and wetlands of Pirang, Marakissa, and Farasuto. It was a pleasure to enjoy all these beautiful birds. This is a small selection of my most beautiful photos.
