Kharkhorin - Erdene Zuu Kharkhorin/Karakorum/Kharkhorum was the old capital of Mongolia. At the time of Genghis Khan and his son Ögedei Khan this city was the capital for 40 years. In 1264 Kublai Khan moved the capital of his empire to Beijing and so Kharkhorin became an ordinary city. The city was destroyed in 1380 by Chinese soldiers. Only the carved rocks in the form of the turtles were spared. Many stones were later used in the construction of this Erdene Zuu Khiid monastery. Stefan Cruysberghs
