The mini dragons of the forest; the fire salamander. This rare land salamander is quite large (14-17cm) and has a unique yellow-black pattern. It lives mainly in old oak-beech forests. It got its name in the Middle Ages when people believed that fire salamanders emerged from the flames. This belief probably arose because the salamanders often hid in damp, rotten tree trunks that people threw into the fire. After which the fire salamanders suddenly emerged.
