Photos/Travel : Aeolian Islands

In the springtime of 2002 I went to the Aeolian Islands with Joker for 10 days. These islands are situated between the mainland of Italy and Sicily. The trip started in Naples with a visit to Pompeii and Herculaneum. Afterwards we explored the different picturesque islands (Salina, Lipari, Vulcano, Stromboli) with the climb of the active volcano Stromboli as climax.

Aeolian Islands : Pompeii - Basilica. In '79 AD life in the Roman city Pompeii stopped abrupt because of a tremendous eruption of the Vesuvius. Nowadays, Pompeii is the best open-air museum to get to know a Roman city. The basilica at the forum was the most important building of the city.

Aeolian Islands : Pompeii - Forum. The forum was the center of the political, religious, economic and social life. The vesuvius appears in the background.

Aeolian Islands : Pompeii - Casa Faun. In Faun's House, god of herders and herds, there is an impluvium with a small statue of dancing Faun.

Aeolian Islands : Pompeii - Casa Venus. In Venus' House you will even find a big wall painting of this goddess of love.

Aeolian Islands : Pompeii - Amphitheatre. In Pompeii you will find the oldest amphitheatre of Italy. This is where gladiator games were organised.

Aeolian Islands : Herculaneum - Fresco Casa Neptunus. Herculaneum, by the seaside, was also covered with lava, dust and ash during the eruption of the Vesuvius. In Herculaneum you'll find luxurious villas with beautiful wall paintings and mosaics.

Aeolian Islands : Lipari - Canneto. Lipari, the biggest volcanic island of the Aeolian Islands. By mountain bikes we explored this wonderful island.

Aeolian Islands : Salina - Monte dei Pogi. The island Salina consists of 2 extinct volcanoes. We climbed the Monte Fossa delle Felci. From the top we had a magnificent view on the other volcano Monte dei Pogi.

Aeolian Islands : Stromboli. Stromboli, a small island with an active volcano.

Aeolian Islands : Stromboli. Early in the evening we left for the expedition to the top of the Stromboli at 926 meters. While approaching the top, we could hear the eruptions and we could see the petrified lava rolling into the sea along the mountain flank.

Aeolian Islands : Stromboli. Almost a the top. After a walking tour of 3 hours we got to the top. As soon as it got dark, we could enjoy the marvellous spectacle of the volcanic eruptions of the Stromboli in the crater situated below.
